CellScope Introduces otoscopes for iPhone connectivity to provide telemedicine services to California parents

Release date: 2014-12-16

Parents with chronic ear infections in California will soon be able to access paediatric care more easily. San Francisco-based CellScope has begun booking its FDA-licensed smartphone-connected otoscope, called Oto Home. The price of direct selling equipment is $79 and will arrive in 4 to 6 weeks. The enhanced version of the Oto Pro is priced at $299 and is more feature-rich. It is also scheduled to start in the United States.

This small smartphone connection device can be connected to the iPhone 5 and 5s, and can use the recording and camera functions of the phone. The device comes with a company-specific software that allows parents and doctors to use a dedicated app for conversations. After placing the device in the child's ear canal, the app's tympanic membrane search guide instructs them to move and tilt the otoscope to capture a video for doctor diagnosis.

After moving the device out of the external auditory canal, the user ends the recording session and enters the symptoms, the latest ear infections, and other children's underlying data. The session is then sent to the remote physician, who will view the video and data and respond to the child's parents two hours later. If necessary, the doctor will make a diagnosis based on the information provided, and the prescription will be sent to the pharmacy chosen by the child's parents.

Certain equipment includes free physician telemedicine services, Oto connectivity services, but $49 per session. CellScope currently only starts telemedicine services for California, but will do so for other weeks or countries in the future.

The company's partner, Arm Sheng, said that the company's design focus is as simple as possible, because unlike the thermometer every family is using, the otoscope device is not a device that people can use.

If successful, CellScope will deliver a device for use in a medical facility to the patient for use in the home in a short period of time.
