The genetic basis of corn is the internal cause of corn "bifurcation." Maize is a cereal crop and "bifurcation" is one of the inherent characteristics of cereal crops. There is an axillary bud at the leaf axil of each node of the corn. When induced by external factors, the axillary bud will grow and develop and form a "bifurcation" in the rhizome.

The external growth environment is the inducing factor for "bifurcation" of corn. There are three main factors that induce corn "fork":

It is a growing environment. In the environment with high fertility, adequate moisture, and high temperatures, it is prone to "fork." Different varieties have different sensitivity to external influence factors. The second is the planting density. When the planting density is too small, the phenomenon of tillering is prone to occur. This is most evident in the cultivation of strong tiller varieties. Therefore, reasonable planting density is conducive to controlling the occurrence of labor. The third is pest and disease damage. When corn is damaged due to pests, diseases and other factors, it will stimulate the growth and development of axillary buds in the roots to produce “bifurcations”. The “bifurcation” caused by pests and diseases is mostly individual plants.

Corn "fork" occurs mostly at the seedling stage. These "bifurcations" not only fail to produce spikes, but also consume nutrients and water. Therefore, once the "bifurcation" is found, it should be removed as soon as possible, and the removal will not affect the yield.
