The symptoms of nitrogen deficiency begin with the lower old leaves, and the symptoms of sulfur deficiency start from the upper fresh leaves. For example, in the case of sulfur deficiency in potatoes, the upper leaves are generally yellowed. In severe cases, brown spots appear on the leaves.

Chen Lun-Shou points out that, in general, acid soils in the south are prone to sulfur deficiency, and sulfur-loving plants such as onions and garlic are prone to sulfur deficiency.
