Recently, the bioactive material scaffold with the activity of inducing nerve regeneration developed by Professor Li Xiaoguang of the School of Basic Medical Sciences of Capital Medical University has been tested and approved to enter clinical trials. It has become the first bioactive material scaffold for inducing nerve regeneration in clinical research in China.
Professor Li Xiaoguang's research group, under the support of the national “Eleventh Five-Year Plan†and “863†program “Stem Cell and Tissue Engineeringâ€, supported the release of neurotrophic factors by binding to neurotrophic factors by means of tissue engineering methods. The group effect of medical material scaffolds, neurotrophic factors and autologous cells is exerted to improve the local micro-environment of spinal cord injury, thereby inducing axon growth and maturation of nerve cells and re-establishing synaptic connections with target tissues. Morphological observation, electrophysiological examination and behavioral evaluation proved that the scaffold can regenerate the morphological structure, reconstruct physiological function and improve some behavioral disorders of the spinal cord after injury. It can repair the 5 mm defect of rat thoracic spinal cord. The centimeter defect, as well as the damage of CA1 region in rat hippocampus, restored the learning and memory and spatial cognitive function of rats to varying degrees.
