Using GMOs to Develop Novel Bird Flu Vaccines

Japan decided to use a genetically modified technology to develop a new type of bird flu vaccine at a cost of 1 billion yen (US$1 or about 111 yen). The new vaccine is expected to be put into use after 5 years. At the end of last year, bird flu was endemic in Asia. Recently, the epidemic reappeared in countries such as Thailand. In view of this, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare will first develop the H5N1 bird flu vaccine that has recently become popular. The researchers will use genetically modified technology to weaken the toxicity of bird flu virus, and then through a series of safety and efficacy tests, strive to mass produce new transgenic bird flu vaccine in 5 years. At present, the National Institute of Infectious Diseases of the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare and the vaccine manufacturers have already begun preparing animal experiments for vaccines. The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare said that the above research will be able to accumulate experience and provide lessons for the development of other new vaccines in the future.
